“What’s love faith got to do… got to do with it?”
I changed Tina Turner’s famous lyrics with my own to introduce the concept of “faith,” because it’s hard to know exactly how it applies to the therapy you receive in a professional’s office.
And, frankly, the answer to that question from my experience is… it depends on you!
First, to what extent would YOU like to involve your faith into therapy?
Faith can be hard to talk about, especially when it involves walking through personal struggles.
Disappointment with God or questioning how His care factor in your life can make someone want to avoid the topic altogether.
I get you wanting to steer clear of faith, and I also understand you wanting to jump right in. Both options are welcomed in my office to support you where you are.
Second, what are YOU struggling with?
Are you questioning the meaning of life, or are you trying to find better communication strategies for interacting with your teenage daughter?
Learning new communication tools might not need to involve faith as much as questioning your existence and values.
I have also worked with women and teens who have been hurt by the church and are trying to understand how it happened and how to recover.
Your personal faith and the problems you are trying to solve will directly influence how much faith will be involved in your journey.
Whatever your stance, YOU call the shots on if and how you integrate faith into your counseling journey.
“Are you a Christian counselor?”
That’s one of the most common questions I get.
It seems like a straightforward question, but it’s not always easy to answer without some clarification.
Clients might be asking me if my faith aligns with Christian beliefs and values. They also might be asking if I integrate faith within the counseling sessions. Let me address both:
Are you a Christian that’s a counselor?
I am a Christian who offers professional counseling to women and teenagers. Since I am licensed, it is not appropriate for me to influence or force my faith on my therapy clients. Not to mention… that sounds HORRIBLE – even if I didn’t have a licensing board I reported to!
Everyone is on their own journey of faith, and it is my hope you will feel safe and supported no matter where you are at this moment. It’s okay to wrestle with hard questions in my office involving faith or anything for that matter.
Do you offer Christian counseling?
I do offer Christian counseling for those who want to involve their faith within the counseling process. This typically happens organically by communicating that your Christian faith is something you find valuable for our counseling sessions.
